Watch Out for Misleading Sales Techniques

Recently, one of our good customers shared an email they received from SealMaster. I won’t include it here but would be happy to provide it to anyone interested. I want to refute some of the false claims they’re making. We’ve watched our competitors steal our customers over the years with misleading sales tactics and have decided that the only way to fight back is with the facts. This season, we’ve realized that many of our customers have been fed misleading information by SealMaster reps. It’s our goal to spread the truth to anyone interested.

They claim that we tell people there’s no difference between our sealer and theirs. That couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s not just our opinion that GemSeal sealer is better than SealMaster, it’s a provable fact for anyone willing to listen. Our sealer comes straight from the GemSeal plant where water is added for RTU sealer in a controlled setting and run through the mill for proper emulsification. We sell it like we receive it, no doctoring it up on location. GemSeal has plants across the United States that are owned and run by the corporation. SealMaster’s plants are owned by individual franchisees and don’t have anywhere near the equipment GemSeal has to produce consistent quality. They tout their batch method manufacturing like it’s a great way to make sealer. The batch process is like mixing sealer with a cake mixer, while the colloid mill is like shooting the materials through a jet engine. SealMaster can’t use the colloid mill process because franchisees can’t afford to buy a colloid mill, they cost 6X more than a batch system. The batch system is a far cry from the continuous high shear colloid mill process that produces a homogenous emulsion with uniform particles. The idea that their plants can produce a sealer with the same quality is laughable.

They talk about their rich black color. We’ll see you on that and raise you a rich black color that lasts more than a few weeks. They mention the viscosity (thickness) of their sealer. You can take any sealer, water it down, add vinegar or other ingredients to lower the PH and it’ll blow up. You could also increase the viscosity like SealMaster does by using bentonite clay, a low-cost filler that encapsulates water and artificially increases the viscosity. There is a way to see how much clay is in sealer, you test the ash content. The higher the ash content, the more clay (filler). Too much filler and not enough binder makes a weak sealer that won’t last. Just look at the SealMaster MasterSeal product data sheet and check out the ash content—they say 40 to 60%, we’ve seen tests over 60%. On the other hand, GemSeal is a consistent 38%. Seasoned sealcoaters know that thick sealer doesn’t wear well and doesn’t go as far, costing them money and shorting their customers.
