4 Tips on How To Repair Asphalt Driveway Cracks

As an asphalt maintenance professional, you understand how often asphalt surfaces, such as driveways, require repairs. Fractures within the asphalt are considered progressive issues. Without proper attention, these problems become significantly worse over time. To ensure your business satisfies each and every client, here are five tips on how to repair asphalt driveway cracks quickly and effectively.

1. Small Crack Practices

If you only have minor damage, as in just a few small cracks here and there, the process for properly fixing them is quite simple. Use crack filler to fill the fractures carefully. Avoid spilling your filler material on other parts of the driveway. It can leave behind stains. We recommend using a 1-gallon jug with an applicator tip or a pour pot for pourable crack fillers in 5-gallon buckets. Use a trowel to smooth over the crack filler and let it dry completely.

2. Large Crack Practices

As for any crack larger than 1/2 inches in depth, the process is slightly different. We recommend filling deep cracks with silica sand until the crack is only 1 inch deep. Continue filling until you can easily apply filler and other blacktop materials.

3. Always Clean Cracks

The only way to ensure your repairs are successful is by preparing your asphalt surface before starting work. Mainly, we recommend cleaning out cracks to remove any debris. This helps you determine how much silica sand is required to fill. Make sure the fracture is completely dry before applying the crack filler.

4.When All Else Fails . . .

Sometimes, asphalt damages are too severe to benefit from a quick fix. If the driveway is significantly worse for wear, a total replacement or resurface might be in order to ensure success. Determine whether the cracks are fixable on their own. If not, start planning for a more comprehensive repair project.
