A Quick Guide to Improving Adhesion When Sealcoating Asphalt

Proper adhesion makes the difference between a sealcoat that lasts years and one that fails within months. Many contractors struggle with peeling, flaking, or uneven coverage because they overlook key preparation steps. This quick guide to improving adhesion when sealcoating asphalt will help you achieve better results.

Use the Right Equipment

Start with quality blacktop sealing equipment that distributes sealer evenly across the surface. Clogged spray tips or damaged agitation systems create uneven application patterns that weaken adhesion. Clean spray equipment thoroughly between jobs, and maintain proper agitation to keep sealer components mixed.

NAC Supply carries professional-grade equipment designed for sealcoating applications, including spray systems that ensure consistent coverage.

Watch the Weather

Even with top-quality equipment, weather conditions can destroy your results. Apply sealer when temperatures stay above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and humidity levels are moderate. High humidity prevents proper curing, while extreme heat causes sealer to dry too quickly and form a weak bond.

Check the forecast for at least 24 hours after application. Rain during the curing process will wash away uncured sealer and create adhesion problems.

Clean Up Before Application

Surface contamination blocks sealer from bonding directly with the asphalt. Remove all dirt, debris, vegetation, and oil stains before you begin.

Pay special attention to areas around dumpsters, parking spaces, and high-traffic zones where oil and grease accumulate. These contaminants create invisible barriers that prevent proper adhesion even when the surface appears clean.

Dry the Surface Thoroughly

Moisture trapped beneath sealer creates adhesion failures that appear weeks or months later. After cleaning, verify the surface is completely dry before application. This means more than just waiting for visible water to evaporate.

Test moisture levels by taping plastic sheets over several areas and checking for condensation after 30 minutes. Any moisture indicates the surface needs additional drying time.

Give Sealer Time to Dry

Proper curing requires patience and controlled conditions. Restrict foot traffic for at least 4 hours and vehicle traffic for 24 to 48 hours, depending on weather conditions. Premature traffic damages the surface and creates permanent impressions that collect water and debris.

Block access to treated areas with cones, tape, or temporary barriers. Consider the timing of your application to minimize disruption while allowing adequate curing time.
