Asphalt Maintenance: How To Seal Asphalt

Asphalt can last several decades if you perform proper maintenance on it. With regular inspections and patch filling, you can extend its life greatly. In this article, we will talk about one of the major forms of asphalt maintenance, how to seal asphalt, which is much easier with asphalt sealcoat equipment.

Clean and Pretreat

The first step for sealing your asphalt involves cleaning and pretreating the area before you start applying sealant. Use a wire broom to clean away any built-up dirt and sweep or use a blower to get rid of any debris. Once you’ve done this, scrape and prime any oil spots and wait until dry.

Mix the Sealant

All sealant needs a good mix before it is ready to be poured. Try getting a mixing paddle and fully mix the sealant until the water mixes with it smoothly.

Start With the Edges

Once your asphalt is clean and dry, apply a small layer of sealant along the edges of the asphalt. This will help create a wall or barrier that will limit the spread of the sealant. Ideally, after you apply it and cover all the pours, you should also cut in on all the edges.

Pour and Spread

The last step is pouring the sealant onto the asphalt. If your asphalt is at a slant, pour near the top of the slant and spread it around. Then, use a brush or rubber squeegee to spread the sealant across the asphalt.

These are the basic steps for how to seal asphalt. The last piece of advice we can give you is to read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully before you attempt this process and listen to their instructions even if they go against the tips in this guide. The manufacturer will know how their product works better than this general guide.
